Matrix.org today released their biggest update since their in launch back in September.

The release of Synapse 0.5.0 effectively concludes their alpha testing phase as the security model is now feature complete.  Matrix are cautiously encouraging people to run their own Synapse installation to help them squash all and any bugs as they move forward with their beta testing.
